Cognitive Approach Flashcards
What is the cognitive approach
Cognitive approach studies internal mental proscessed, like perception, memory and attention
How does the cognitive approach link to the information proscesing model
The mental proscesses, like information proscessing can be compared to a computer.
Informational proscessing model
Input (stimuli) –> proscessing –> output (behaviour)
What is a schema
A mental framework that helps individuals organize and interpret information based on past experiences and knowledge.
What is the computer model
A model that compares the mind to a computer, suggesting that mental processes (such as perception, memory, and decision-making) work similarly to how a computer processes information. This has been critiscised for being overly simplistic
What is the theoretical model
Represents complex cognitive functions in a simplified way, for example the multi store of memory: which describes how mental proscesses work, like perception. It has generable testable theories because they have been tested systematically and scientifically
What is the emergence of cognitive neuroscience
scientifically identify and examine neurological structures and chemical proscessed in the brain, its linked to internal mental proscesses
Definition of inference
Inference is going beyond immediate evidence to make assumptions about mental proscesses that cannot be directly observed
Positives of cognitive approach
The cognitive approach sees humans as being able to reason and make consious descisions in the limits of what they know, so adopts a soft deterministic approach. This is more flexible than the behaviourist approach as it allows humans to have some consious insight into their behaviour , a complexity whcih divides us from animals so provides a better explanation for human behaviour compared to other aprroaches
Negatives of the cognitive approach
Overly absract ideas as it makes extensive use of schemas as a way of understanding cognitive basis of behaviour. The reliance of schemas means that some ideas in cognitive psychology may seem too abstract and not have enough supporting empirical evidence of such mechanisms being observed . Therfore reducing potential practical applications of cognitive research as it remains mainy theoretical.
