social learning theory Flashcards
what is the social learning theory about
it is about us watching others and choosing to imitate their behaviour
what are some assumptions
- agrees with behaviourists
- in that much behaviour is learned through experience
- learning occurs through observations and imitation of role models such as parents or friends
- learning can occur directly through cc + oc but can also occur indirectly
what is vicarious reinforcement
it is where you see others being rewarded for behaviour and we want to do the same
how did bandura prove the social learning theory and vicarious reinforcement proved
through a lab experiment, containing 72 nursery children - 36 boys and 36 girls. first condition shown an aggressive model to 24 children, next was a non-aggressive model to another 24 and then a control to another 24 model
what where the results of the lab experiment
- it showed that children who saw the aggressive model acted more aggressively to the bobo doll then the children who saw the non-aggressive model .
- also saw that boys imitated more physically aggressive acts than girls
- boys were more likely to imitate same-sex models more than girls
what is the long ARRM
Attention to the role model
Retention of the observed behaviour
Reproduction of the target behaviour
Motivation to imitate the observed behaviour
what are strengths of this
- influential in introducing age appropriate films
- has experimental support
- can be used to explain the influence on media on behaviour
what are some weaknesses of this
- the results of experiments bay be influence by demand characteristics. the environment may not reflect the way people learn
- does not account the influence of biological factors on behaviour
- does not take into account free will and moral
- sees behaviour as environmentally determined
