What is id
It is your drive for pleasure. happens in the unconscious mind. Freud said you are born with this. Motivated by pleasure principle
What is ego
Ego balances the Id and superego and happens in the conscious mind. Motivated by reality principle
What is superego
It is your moral compass to do good happens in your unconscious mind. Motivated by morality principle
What happens if your id is dominant
You could be selfish, become and addict and be out of control
What happens if your superego is dominant
You can be strict, depressed and have anxiety
What are defence mechanisms
They are what the ego uses to protect you from trauma or abuse
What 3 main types of defence mechanisms are their
Denial, repression and displacement
What is displacement
It is where you redirect your feelings to another suitable traget
What is repression
Repression is where thoughts are kept out of conscious mind
What is denial
Refusing to accept a fact that has happened
What is the conscious mind
Contains thoughts and perceptions that can be actively used
What is the unconscious mind
Contains thoughts that have been suppressed during childhood.
What psychosexual stages are their
Oral, anal, phallic, latent, genital stage
What is the oral stage
- the mouth is the focus of pleasure - id
- the id is in control
-fixation occurs at this stage of a child is weaned too soon or is not weaned soon enough makes the adult gain pleasure from oral gratification
What is the anal stage
- 1-3 years old or when potty training is completed
- the focus for pleasure is the anus
- if stage not resolved it will lead to anal character
- anally retentive - very tidy, Likes order and being in control
- anally expulsive - generous but disorganised doesn’t like to follow rules
What is the phallic stage
• occurs between the ages of 3-5 with superego
• The focus of pleasure and sexual energy is genitals
• Boys experience the Oedipus complex
• Boy takes on gender identity when they release they are male
What is the latency stage
• age 6 to puberty approximately
• Sexual urges sublimated into sports and other hobbies
• Focus on developing same sex friendships
• No particular requirements for successful completion
• Lull before the storm of puberty
What is the genital stage
• puberty into adulthood
• Focus on genitals but not so same extent as phallic stage
• Task is to develop healthy adult relationships
• This should happen if earlier stages have been negotiated successfully
What is the psychodynamic approach
- it is one of the earliest approaches in psychology
- where childhood will make you who you are when you grow up
- experiences from childhood come out later in some sort of disorder
What is psychoanalysis
It is the talking cure, makes the unconscious thoughts turn into conscious thoughts by talking about it
What is the case study little hans about
It is about a 5 year old boy who is scared of horses as they remind him of his father. Little hans is like this because he is jealous of his father and wants his mum all to himself and sees his dad as a rival.
What is the Oedipus complex
The attachment of the child to the parent of the opposite sex, accompanied by envious and aggressive feelings toward the parent of the same sex
