cognitive approach Flashcards
how does the cognitive approach explain human behaviour
it says it is from the way we learn and digest information
how can internal mental processes be investigated
they can be investigated using scientific methods and principals using lab experiments
where do mental processes come between
they come between stimulus and responses
what is the schema
the mental representation based of our experiences and knowledge and understanding
what do schemas do
- help us predict what will happen in the world based on past experience
- process information quickly
- help quickly make decisions
- help us make shortcuts in thinking
what are negative schemas
they are schemas that can lead to faulty conclusions such as stereotypes.
what did bugelsky and Alan pay do in 1962
they made an experiment where 2 groups of people where either shown faces or animals and on the last image they saw either a rat or man depending on the group they were in.
theoretical model
theory on how short term memory works. it is a theory as you cannot see into someone’s brain but we can make inferences
how are we similar to how a computer works
computer models - input stimuli - processes - response (output)
when did cognitive neuroscience emerge
in 1956 by miller and gazziniga
what was the aim of cognitive neuroscience
to combine what we know about the structure of the brain linking it with what we started to discover about cognitive approach
what is procedural memory
long term memory like riding a bike
what can scanning technology do
can describe the neurological basis of mental processing and some disorders
what are some practical applications of cognitive neuroscience
- use of scanning techniques to locate different types of memory, to study mental processing patients with depression
- use of imaging techniques and angiography to study the effects of normal ageing on the brain or to observe the effects of the stroke on the brain
