How will you as a teacher ensure all students are valued as individuals?
Showing students that there are multiple perspectives that can be taught depending on racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic groups
Define prejudice and discrimination.
A preconceived negative attitude toward members of group. Prejudice is an unjustified or incorrect attitude (usually negative) towards an individual based solely on the individual’s membership of a social group. For example, a person may hold prejudiced views towards a certain race or gender etc. (e.g. sexist)
Discrimination is an actual behavior or actions (process) that prevent members of specific group from participating equally in society. These include legislations, policies, and practices lead persons differently
What are 3 strategies for keeping prejudice and discrimination out of your classroom?
make sure that classroom posters, pictures, books, music, toys, dolls, and other materials are diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, age, family situations, disabilities, and so on
- teach lessons directly that actively contribute to affirming diversity and reducing prejudice and bias
- work toward transforming schools so that equity is achieved throughout the school as an organization and society at large
