Teacher Centered Philosophies
Essentialism: A philosophy of education based that includes a core if information that all educated people should know, hard work and mental discipline, teacher centered instruction, it draws from idealism and realism, if it focuses on developing basic skills not seeking truths
Behaviorism: Behavior is determined by environment, not heredity is a response to external stimuli, it is related to realism and linked to the environment.
Positivism: includes a focus an observable and measurable information, rejects beliefs about mind spirit consciousness, believes reality is explained by the laws of matter and motion and knowledge is based on sense perceptions and objective reality.
Student centered Philosophies
Humanism: Education should enhance innate goodness the students should be at the forefront of all decisions, education should start with the individual self.
Constructivism: Teacher is learner. Hands on activity. Students are provided opportunity to construct meaning through critical thinking and big ideas. students have the freedom to infer their own answers.
Progressivism: A philosophy of education developed by John Dewey based on the assumption that all learning is active that learning is intellectual social emotional and that curriculum should begin with the Childs interests and experiences. How to think not what to think
