Define: status
the importance or standing of an individual within a group, as perceived by the members of the group
How can status affect behaviour?
Creating expectations of other peoples’ behaviour and how they relate to each other
Define: power
an individual or group’s ability to control or influence the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of another person or group
What is power determined by?
Status
Does power occur in all human interactions?
Can it be used deliberately or undeliberately, for good and for bad?

Define: role
Behaviour adopted to an individual or assigned to them that influences the way in which they unction or act in different situations or life in general
Is a person’s role often linked to status and power?
Yes
What are role expectations?
When members of a group expect a person to behave in accordance to their role, especially when their role carries power and status
Real life example when power was being abused?
In Abu Chrain Prison
America and Britain invaded Iraq because they thought they had nuclear weapons
Created detention centre for Iraqi prisoners of war
in 2004, pictures released of extreme abuse - intimidation using dogs, pulling them with rope, standing in uncomfortable positions…
