Outline La Piere’s research (1934)
Aim was to see if racist attitudes matched racist behaviour
For two years, he travelled around America with a Chinese couple. They went to 184 restaurants, expecting racist behaviour but it was “good” overall and were only kicked out once.
Sent a questionnaire to all restaurants they visited, asking whether they’d let Chinese people into their establishment
50% replied, only one said yes.
Concluded that attitudes do not affect behaviour.
