Social Influence: Resistance Flashcards
What does social resistance refer to?
Pressure to conform is reduced if there are other people not conforming
What does Asch suggest in regards to resistance to social influence?
The dissenter doesn’t have to give the right answer but someone else not following the majority frees others to follow their own conscious
What is the role of a dissenter in resistance?
Acts as a model and pressure to obey can be reduced if others are seen to do the same
What effect did disobedience have on Milgram’s study?
Disobedient peer condition reduced obedience from 65% to 10%
Who studied LOC and continuum?
Rotter et al
What is an internal LOC?
The things that happen to them are largely controlled by themselves
What is an external LOC?
Believe the things that happen to them are outside of their control
What are the features of internal LOC?
Resist pressures of social influence because they base their desicions off of own beliefs and are intelligent
What is the strength that suggests there is evidence for the role of support in resistance?
- Albrecht et al studied programme to help pregnant adolecents stop smoking, one group given older buddy
- Group with buddy less likely to smoke at end
- Social support can help young people resist social influence in real life
What did Albrecht et al suggest as a strength of resistance?
Group of pregnant adolecents who were given an older buddy were less likely to smoke at end of programme
What is the strength of social resistance that suggests that there is evidence for the role of dissenting peers?
- Gamson et al ppts in groups were asked to give evidence for oil company to use in smear campaign
- 29 out of 33 groups resisted
- Supporters can undermine legitimacy of authority and reduce obedience
What did Gamson et al study as a strength of resistance to social influence?
Ppts in groups were asked to give evidence for an oil company to use in a smear campaign and 29 out of 33 groups resisted
What is the strength that suggests there is evidence of LOC in resistance to social influence?
- Holland repeated Milgram’s study and measured whether the ppts were internals or externals
- 37% of internals did not continue until highest shock level whilst only 23% of externals did not continue
- Resistance is partly related to LOC and increases validity of this explanation
What did Holland suggest as a strength of LOC?
He repeated Milgram’s study and founf that 37% of internals didn’t continue to highest level but only 23% of externals
What is the limitation that suggests that not all research supports the role of LOC in resistance?
- Twenge et al analysed LOC data from America over past few years
- People are becoming more independent but more external which is surprising because if resistance is linked to LOC we would expect people to become more internal
- LOC may not be valid explanation
