What is normative social influence?
- desire to be liked
- desire for the approval of others and to be accepted
- (often results in compliance only)
What is informational social influence?
-desire to be right
-look to others to give us info about how to behave or think
-particularly in new or ambiguous situations
(Results In identification or internalisation)
What is compliance?
The person conforms publicly with the views or behaviours expressed by others in the group but (privately disagrees.)
What does identification mean?
Where an individual adopts the views and or behaviours of a group both publicly and privately, they feel identified and feel a sense of group membership.
Behaviour may only be temporary and are not maintained on leaving the group.
What is internalisation?
This is conversion or true change of private views to match those of the group.
They are not dependent on the presence of the group and attitudes and behaviours have become part of the individuals value system.
