Psychopathology Flashcards
Taste aversion
A learned response by eating toxic or poisoned food happens when we associate the taste of food that made us ill with the feeling of illness, this is thought to have an evolutionary basis as it prevents us from eating food to make us unwell.
Food neophobia
Reluctance to eat foods that we have not encountered before, we are more likely to eat food we know is safe
Obesity restraint theory- (Herman and Mack)
Dieting attempts to restrain eating, paradoxically results and overeating therefore increases obesity
Obesity- two types of restraint
‘Rigid’- all or nothing approach
Flexible- some fattening food can be eaten guilt free
Rigid restraint found to be less affective of reducing fat intake
Obesity cognitive explanation
Restrained eaters consciously think about ‘good and bad’ foods
Obesity: disinhibition
Distorted thinking
Overeat in response to various stimuli e.g. buffet, emotional state
