Stratification
Relates to the time were people are categorised in society based on their class
The registrar generals scale
To classify class, this scale was used until 1997
The NS SEC
In 1997 this was changed from TRGS to show the labour market is different and jobs are hard to classify into so few sections
Objective definitions of class
People in society are ordered in a certain way due to a certain measurement device
Subjective definitions of class
When people order themselves and decide how they describe themselves
Ascribed status
The status that you are born with eg Prince William was born into the royal family.
Achieved Status
The status that you have worked towards getting eg Cheryl Cole has worked her way to become an icon
Traditional Working Class
These people were labourers and worked jobs like cleaning chimneys or gardening
New working class
These people are normally middle class but prefer to refer to themselves as working class because it looks better in society
Under class
People in society who are homeless or possibly on benefits. They have nothing.
Middle Class
Strive to be upper class. Normal people that often try to live their life through their children so they have the best life.
Traditional Upper Class
People that live in large houses and have very high ranking jobs. They may participate in leisure activities such as polo
Super rich
People that have large amounts of wealth. This would most likely include vast amounts of land.
Jet Set Pop aristocracy
Money earned through sport, entertainment and media
Entrepreneurial Rich
People that have earned their money through setting up their own business and working hard eg Lord Sugar
