Definition (loneliness)
A feeling of disconnection, detachment or emptiness
(effect later adulthood - mobility problems)
Definition (social isolation)
An individual is socially isolated out of choice. Friends, family, community - separated from these individuals
Social barriers
poor mental health and well-being, poor physical health
Economic barriers
can’t afford devices, can’t afford their own vehicle
Family structure
Definition - a persons family structure can positively and negatively impact a persons life course
Nuclear family - a married couple and their biological child or children
Positives - more financial security, encouragement to do well in education
Negatives - isolated from extended family, relationships could not be healthy but staying together for children
Extended family - a family which extends beyond the nucleus family to include grandparents and other relatives
Positives - help with childcare, develop strong bonds
Negatives - lack of space, interference with parenting the child
Single parent families - a mum or dad on their own with a child
Positives - good role models for their child, good bond between parent and child
Negatives - parent may spend less time with child as they need to work, anxiety for parent if there’s money issues
Blended family - when you and your partner make a life with the children from one or both of your previous relationships
Positives - benefit from playing with other children, share jobs with other partner (school, cleaning up and activities)
Negatives - share bedrooms resulting in lack of privacy, may not get a long with the other partner/children
Same sex family - a family of the same sex with and without children
Positives - financial security, healthy relationships
Negatives - be bullied at school, not accepted by others
Foster family - a family that provides custody or guardianship for children whose parents are dead or unable to look after them
Positives - may feel safer in their new homes/environment
Negatives - might not bond with the foster parent, have behavioural issues (unable to cope with the child)
Childless family - families with two positive partners who can’t or do not want any children
Positives - focus more on themselves, don’t have to worry about money troubles
Negatives - put a strain on the relationship, may be unable to have a child (affect mental health)
Religion and culture
Culture beliefs - relates to an individuals beliefs about how things should be and ways of doing things
Religious beliefs - relate to a particular religion such as christianity, islam, buddhism, sikhism and Judaism
