Social Class Inequality (20) Flashcards
Two Areas of life where there is evidence of Social Class Inequality
Education
Health
Education Example One
MP David Lammy through Freedom of Information Requests in 2017
In 2008 Oxford and Cambridge granted 79% of their offers to children in the top social class (sons and daughters of barristers, doctors and CEOs) which rose to 82% and 81% respectively in 2015.
Education Example One Explanation
Cleary unfair and the disparity is increasing.
Offer more places to students from one school, Eton, than FSM students across the country
Effect social capital has on attainment levels
Parents can purchase and use social capital private education and houses in wealthy areas where the better schools are located.
Creates a self-serving system that allows little opportunity
Cycles of high expectations attending the best schools
Education Example Two
DoE Attainment Gap Data 2015
Found 36.5% of disadvantaged students achieved A*-C grades including Maths and English compared to 64% of all other students.
Education Example Two Explantation
Gibson and Ashanta support this as they found a correlation between household income and poor educational performance.
One reason for this is because of working-class families don’t have the material capital to support their children’s education like books, computers, school trips and uniforms
Cannot afford ‘hidden costs’ of Education that material capital provides and this negatively impacts performance as can’t experience education fully as sick days and being sent home.
Health Example One
The Health by National Deprivation Report by the ONS in 2018
Found in England and Wales the least deprived Men and Women at birth could expect to live almost a decade more (9.3 years) than the most deprived men and women.
Health Example One Explanation
Supports the social gradient of Health Inequality, the lower the social class the poorer the health. Due to the lack of choices when it comes to health. Lower classes live in Food desert and are socially isolated, meaning they have less access to cheap healthy food so they eat cheap unhealthy food. Big supermarkets with options have relocated outside of large cities which lower classes cannot access due to lack of means.
Health Example Two
Mental Health Foundation: Poverty Statistics in 2016
Found Children and Adults living in households in the lowest 20% income bracket are 2/3x more likely to develop mental health problems than those in the highest income bracket.
Health Example Two Explanation
Willams also found that poorer people reported feelings of unfairness due to lack of healthcare and are stressed and feeling worthless.
Poor treatment is a trigger to mental health problems so develop bad habits to cope with the stress which contributes to bad health.
Alcohol, smoking, drugs.
M/C can access quality healthcare and don’t face such stressors
