when society adopts a new wat of behaving which then becomes widely accepted as the norm
what are the steps of social change
-drawing attention to the issue
-consistency
-deeper processing
-augmentation principle
-snowball effect
-social cryptomnesia
what does drawing attention to the issue do
if we are exposed to the views of a minority, our attention is drawn to it. if the views are different then this might draw conflict towards it
what does consistency do
minorities are more influential when fighting for social change if they are consistent, they are taken more seriously as they are seen to truly believe the cause
what is deeper processing
as a result of the conflict, arguments are examined more closely, the more people changing their attitude the greater effect of change
what is the augmentation principle/ what does it do
if there are risks involved in putting forward an argument, then they are taken more seriously. the impact is increased if they take the consequences and they could risk abuse and media attention
what is the snowball effect
a process that starts from an initial state of small significance and increasingly gets bigger
what is social cryptomnesia
when social change occurs the new attitude becomes and integral part of the societies culture and the source of minority influence is often forgotten
