what is social support
the presence of a non-conforming person reduces obedience an increases resistance
social support- conformity (asch)
asch found that the presence of another non conformist confederate lowered overall conformity in the lines task
social support- obedience (milgram)
milgram found that obedience levels dropped from 65% to 10% when the teacher was joined by another disobedient confederate
allen and levine 1971
lower conformity when there was a dissenter, social support is shown in a similar way to asch
gamson et al. 1982
higher resistance to obedience as the participants were in groups, shows social support as more people will resist because other people could be doing so if they are not alone in the presence of an authority figure
