Social approach KC4: Intra dynamics Flashcards
intra-group dynamics
Intra-group dynamics are the psychological processes that take place within a group. They influence how the group functions. there are 5
What are the 5 things that intra-group dynamics include?
Group cohesion, group roles, common goals, groupthink, social facilitation
Group cohesion
the extent to which group members are psychologically bonded and ‘pull in the same direction’. Incohesive groups, members stick together to pursue common goals. Cohesive groups tend to be more successful. However, cohesive groups can lead to groupthink, because no one wants ‘to rock the boat’
Roles
The functions that individuals perform within a group. Usually involves one of four types - task, social, procedural, and individualist
What do the first three roles do to group cohesion?
increase group cohesion
what are the the first three roles of group cohesion?
task roles (task leaders and energisers)
social roles (encouragers and compromisers)
procedural roles (gatekeepers and recorders)
What does the last role do to group cohesion?
Weakens group cohesion
What is the last role of group cohesion?
Individualist roles (blockers and jokesters)
Common goals
The outcomes of group activity that all members share and work towards
Groupthink
There was a strong need in cohesive groups for everyone to agree. this can lead to errors in decision making because the members of the group do not properly consider criticisms and alternatives
Social facilitation
Individuals perform better on a simple and/or well practised task when other people (a group) are present
Name 1 strength of intra dynamics
Research to support
there is research to support the assumption that intra group dynamics influence how the group functions. Thurmer Found that when group members believe their contribution to common goals is recognised by others, the group performs better. This is because members focus on the groups goals rather than their own individual goals
Name 1 limitation of intra dynamics
Group roles can be vague and overlap between members, who may not fully understand their roles in the group, so their performance suffers.
Gowen found that group performance on a task Improved by 12% when members worked towards group/common goals. However, when they were allowed to work towards both group and individual goals There was a 31% improvement. Therefore, the links between intra group dynamics and performance are not fully understood
