Cognitive approach KC2: remembering Flashcards
what are the 2 forms of remembering?
recall and recognition
what are the 2 types of recall?
free recall and cued recall
free recall
retrieval from a memory store with no help. eg, what is the capital of France
cued recall
retrieval from a memory store with help from a cue (trigger). eg, what is the capital of France? it begins with a P
recognition
when we remember something because we have encountered it before
meaningful cues
they have meaning directly linked to the information to be remembered. eg, a heading, key word or mnemonics
without meaning cues
these cues are not linked to the information to be remembered in a meaningful way. they are indirectly linked to the material by being encoded at the same time the material was learnt
context (external) dependant cues
remembering is more likely to occur when an individuals external environment is the same at recall to how it was when the information was encoded (learnt)
state (internal) dependant cues
remembering is more likely to occur when an individuals internal state is the same at recall to how it was when the information was encoded (learnt)
name 1 strength of remembering
Has practical application so is useful
retrieval cues have practical application. eg, mnemonics use meaningful cues to trigger retrieval of information from long term memory
name 1 limitation of remembering
some cues are not very important in everyday remembering
context-related cues are not as powerful as meaningful cues because environments at learning/;encoding and retrieval are usually different, such as a student learning course material in a classroom but them sitting their exam in an exam hall. therefore, not all cues are equally important and some are not very useful in everyday situations.
