self concept
who you are and what you are capable of doing, can develop by interacting with others
cooley (self concept)
thought it comes from looking at others response to us, looking glass self, helps us interpret if they see us as strong, weak, good, bad, etc
mead (self concept)
“I” which is the spontenous, creative, innate while “me” is the social definition
self esteem
judgment of ourselves, categorical: external categories, self descriptions: external characteristics
self control
includes ability to response initiation, response inhibition, and delayed gratification
response initiation
being able to not initiate a behavior before having all info (ex: raising hand before teacher finishes asking question)
response inhibition
ability to stop behavior that has already begun (ex: a tantrum)
delayed gratification
ability to hold out for a larger reward by forgoing a smaller immediate reward (marshmallow test)
erikson’s initiative vs guilt
ages 3-5, desire to take initiative of things (ex: choosing clothes, making friends, feeding themselves)
