What are the 7 elements to consider in a properly balanced diet?
Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre
What does macronutrients consist of?
Carbohydrates, fats and protein
What do complex carbs (starch) consist of and where are they found?
Found in natural foods such as bananas, brown rice, wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, nuts and potatoes.
What do simple carbs (sugars) consist of and where are they found?
Found in natural form in fruit and veg and in their refined form in biscuits.
What do fats do and what foods are they found in?
They provide energy and together with glycogen help muscles to work. They’re found in butter, margarine and cooking oils. Found in foods such as bacon, cheese and oily fish.
What do proteins do and what foods are they found in?
They build muscles and repair damage. Animal protein is found in meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. Plant and veg protein is found in pulses (lentils, peas and beans), nuts, bread and potatoes.

They’re essential for healthy body.
Calcium
Important in formation of bones and teeth and helps make bones strong, crucial for many sports. Must keep up calcium intake as get older to reduce likelihood of osteoporosis
