What are the six skill related components of fitness
- Agility
- Balance
- Co-ordination
- Power
- Reaction time
- Speed
Agility
The ability to change position and control the body at speed
What sports require agility?
- Winger in a football needs to have a good agility in order to drop there shoulder, change position and beat the defender
- A rugby player running to the try lune also needs agility to dodge tackling defenders
Balance
The ability to keep the body stable while at rest or on the move
Static balance and Dynamic balance
Static - Keeping the body stable while stationary e.g. doing a handstand
Dynaminc - Maintaining a controlled, stable position while moving e.g. hammer throwing
Co-ordination
The ability to use two or more body parts together
Different types of co-ordination
Foot eye co-ordination (when taking a touch in football)
Chest eye co-ordination or thigh eye co-ordination (when chesting the ball in football)
Head eye co-ordination (when heading the ball away in football)
Hand eye co-ordination (when serving in tennis)
Power
The ability to undertake strength performences quickly
Formula - Power = strength x speed
Why may athletes use power?
Athletes may use power to help propel themselves or an object. In many sports, athletes need to be able to jump high either in a game such as football or in a discipline such as high jump
Reaction time
The time between a stimulus and a movement in response to it. In most sports, the signal for a reaction is a sight stimulus e.g. a ball or a shuttlecock
Speed
The rate at which an individual can perform a movement or cover a distance
