6 skill related components of fitness
- Agility
- Balance
- Co-ordination
- Power
- Reaction time
- Speed
Agility
The ability to change position and control the body at speed (football because if you are a winger you will need to drop your shoulder one way and then accelerate the other way while controlling your body)
Balance
Being able to keep the body stable while at rest or on the move
What are the two types or balance?
Static balance: keeping the body stable while stationary (handstand)
Dynamic balance: maintaining a controlled, stable position while moving (hammer-throwing)
Co-ordination
The ability to use two or more body parts together (tennis when you are serving)
Different types of co-ordination
- Foot-eye co-ordination
- Chest-eye or thigh-eye co-ordination
- Head-eye co-ordination
- Hand-eye co-ordination
What is power?
The ability to undertake strength performances quickly. It can be written as a formula: power = strength x speed
(for example high jump, football when heading the ball)
What is reaction time?
The time between a stimulus and a movement in response to it
(for example in a game of football, the stimulus is the ball and the goalkeeper will have to react quickly in order to save it)
Speed
The rate at which an individual can perform a movement or cover a distance
