Soc 10 Flashcards
Injury preventions
- Apply the principles of training
- Warming up/cooling down
- Checking equipment and facilities
- Protective equipment and clothing
- Playing to the rules of the game
Types of injuries
- Soft tissue
- Sprain
- Strain
- Torn cartilage
- Fracture
- Dislocation
- Concussion
- Abrasion
Soft tissue
Joint injuries
Sprain
Damaged ligament
Strain
Twist, pull or tear of a muscle or tendon
Torn cartilage
Damaged elastic substance which lines adjoining bones
Fracture
Broken or cracked bone
Dislocation
When a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position
Concussion
Symptons include: headaches, loss of co-ordination, confusion or slurred speech
Abrasion
Friction of the skin against a rough surface.
How can soft tissue occur?
Frequent repetitive exercises can often result in injury to joints
How can sprains occur?
Falling or landing awkwardly
How can a strain occur?
Sprinting or other explosive movements
How can torn cartilage occur?
Often due to wear and tear from long-term overuse
How can a fracture occur?
Occurs from a blow, severe twisting or wrenching or a joint
How can dislocation occur?
Hard blows which causes one of the bones to be displaced
How can concussion occur?
Normally caused by a blow to the head
How can abrasion occur?
Can happen from a fall or as a result of tackle
Why is it important to apply principles of training?
To match your individual needs, to ensure that you don’t get injured.
Why must you play to the rules in a sport to prevent injuries?
If you don’t you will get punished, they do this to allow safety for all participants.
Why should you wear protective equipment to prevent injury?
Many activities require protective equipment relative to the sport, and it is also important to not wear the clothing that may injure an opponent
How does checking equipment and facilities prevent injury?
Organisers should check that the facilities are safe and secure, and that any equipment is in good condition.
How can warming up and cooling down prevent injury?
Warming up: Perform a light aerobic activity to increase blood flow to workimg muscles and stretch those muscles to avoid injury.
Cool down - Gradually reduce the level of activity to help with the dispersal of lactic acid and avoid muscle stiffness.
What does RICE stand for?
- Rest
- Ice
- Compress
- Elevate
Two examples of strains
- Golfers elbow
- Tennis elbow
What are the 4 type of fractures?
- Stress Fracture
- Compound Fracture
- In closed Fracture
- Simple Fracture
What is a stress fracture?
They can happen as a result of fatigue
What is a compound fracture?
When the broken bone protrudes through the skin
What is an in closed fracture?
Where the skin over the break is not damaged
What is a simple fracture?
Takes place with no displacement of the bone
