What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system
Protection of vital organs
Muscle attachment
Joints for movements
Storing calcium and phosphorus
Red and white blood cell production
What are long bones?
They are bones that are longer than they are wide, they are used as levers. Vital to generate movement, strength and speed
What are short bones?
Short bones are bones with the same length, width and fitness, they bear weight.
What are irregular bones?
They have an odd shape and vary in function. The vertebrae helps protect the spinal cord. They help with protection and muscle attatchment.
What are flat bones?
They protect organs or offer a good surface for muscles to attach to. The scapula has three muscles attached to it and the ribs protect the heart and lungs.
What are the 5 sections of the spine?
Cervical (7)
Thoracic(12)
Lumbar(5)
Sacrum(5, fused)
Coccyx(4, fused)
What is the bone in the upper arm?
Humerus
What is the bone on the outside of your lower arm in the anatomical position?
Radius
What is the bone on the inside of your lower arm in the anotomical position?
Ulna
What is the bone on the outside of the shin?
Fibula
What is the big bone on the inside of your shin?
Tibia
What is the big bone in your upper leg?
Femur
What is the bone in the middle of your foot?
Metatarsals
What is the bone in the middle of your hand?
Metacarpals
What are the bones on the end of your feet and hands?
Phalanges
What is the bone between your wrist and hand?
Carpals
What is the bone between your ankle and foot?
