Soc 10 Injuries Flashcards
What are the 8 types of injuries?
Dislocation
Fractures
Abrasion
Concussion
Torn cartilage
Strain(tendon or muscle)
Sprain(ligament)
Soft tissues injury( muscle, ligament or tendon)
What are the 4 types of fractures?
Stress fracture
Compound fracture
In closed
Simple fracture
5 injury preventions?
Applying the principals of training
Warming up/ cooling down
Checking equipments and facilities
Protective equipment and clothing
Playing to the rules of the game
Why do we play to the rules of a sport?
To prevent injury and make sure everyone is playing fairly with the same rules
Why do we wear protective equipment/clothing?
To stop injuries and damages to the body such as helmet in cricket
Why do we check equipment and facilities?
To ensure safety for the people playing the game and to remove any unwanted/dangerous items that are on the pitch or equipment
Why do we warm up/ cool down to prevent injury?
Warming up increases blood flow to working muscles and avoids overstretching
Cooling down slowly reduces the amount of lactic acid in the muscles
RICE
Rest- stop playing
48 hours
Ice- the cold can provide pain relief and limits swelling by reducing blood flow to injured area
For 20 minutes at a time 4 to 8 times a day
Compression- use pressure to hold the ice pack on the injury
Elevation- raise the injury at ideally above the person’s heart as this will minimise swelling
Elevate limb 6 to 10 inches above the heart
Why should we properly apply the principals of training?
So we can train safely and avoid injury
What is dislocation?
When a bone or joint is forced out of its normal position
What is a fracture?
Broken or cracked bone.
Stress fracture
Compound fracture
In closed
Simple fracture
What is abrasion?
Abrasions are grazes caused by friction on the skin against a rough surface
What is a concussion?
An impact to the head that causes unconscienceness, confusion or memory loss caused by a blow to the head
What is torn cartilage?
Cartilage being torn causing rubbing of bones caused by overuse
What is a strain?
Twist, tear or overstretching of a muscle or tendon commonly on the back of the hamstring
What is a sprain?
Damaged ligament from landing awkwardly most commonly on the ankle
What is a soft tissue injury?
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are particularly prone injury because movement outside of their normal range. They can be a tear or overstretched tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage.
