medulla
Pathway for olfaction
Odorant → g protein → ATP → cAMP → allows Na+ in
Causes of anosmia
Smoking Rhinitis Head injury Subarachnoid haemorrhage Meningitis Neural degeneration
Idiopathic causes of anosmia
ahminoglycosides, tetracyclines, corticosteroids, methotrexate, opioids, L-dopa
Effect of Parkinson’s on olfaction
reduced in early PD
Unilateral headache and hypersensitivity
episodic migraine
Hyperosmia
Increased sense of smell caused by lower threshold
Hyperosmia causes
- Benzodiazepine withdrawal
- Inhalation of hydrocarbons - destroy dopaminergic receptors in olfactory bulb
- Methotrexate (treats psoriasis) causes hyperosmia
Innervation of tongue
anterior 2/3 tongue is facial, posterior 1/3 is glossopharyngeal
bells palsy and taste
Affects CN7 therefore loss of taste on half of tongue
Ageusia
Complete loss of taste
Dysguesia
Distortion/unpleasant taste
causes of reduced taste
head trauma, malignancy, Bell’s palsy
Candida, URTI, HIV
Copper/lead, antibiotics, methotrexate
zinc def
