Auditory and vestibular testing Flashcards
Pathway from external environment to cochlea
Tympanic membrane → MIS → oval window → semi circular canals (spatial orientation of head) → cochlea
Which muscle contracts on loud noise
Stapedius
3 ossicles
MIS
What do scala vestibuli and tympani contain
Perilymph - low K+
What does Scala media contain
endolymph - high K+
Where are higher frequencies detected
Base
Where are lower frequencies detected
Apex
What range of hz can human ear hear
20-20,000
Posterior artery stroke sx
Vertigo an hearing issues
ototoxic drugs
furosemide, vancomycin, gentamicin
BPPV
otoliths normally vibrate and change position when you move your head. If otoliths stop working this gives you BPPV sx
Conductive hearing loss
Outer/middle ear
infection, wax, fluid
Sensorineural hearing loss
Inner ear/brain
Damage to hair cells, nerves
otitis media
painful ears and discharge, if worsens then risks tympanic membrane rupturing
Head thrust test
- Rule out cervical myelopathy/radiculopathy
- At rest, pt asked to fixate on distant target
- Pt head rotated rapidly from eft to right
- In normal response, eyes remain on target
- In abnormal response, eyes are dragged off target = peripheral vestibular lesion on RHS
