signs symptoms
- initial symptoms: high fever, head and body aches, vomiting (sometimes contagious)
- early rash: The most contagious stage lasts 4 days
- pustural rash and scabs: last abt 10 days is contagious
- scabs fall off: 6 days contagious
- no scabs: abt four weeks after rash appears, all scabs fall off person no longer contagious
two clinical forms
variola major: severe/most common
- fatality: 30%
variola minor: less common/severe
- fatality <1%
diagnosis
isolation of virus from blood samples or pustule liquid
treatment
