Small Scale Experiments Flashcards
What are the 2 small scale studies
Pilot studies
Case studies
What is a pilot study
A test before the actual experiment
researchers do pilot studies because
To see if whether what they’re doing will work
What are the reasons for doing a pilot study
Ensure high validity
Check p.t. Understand the instructions
Test their test works
Ask p.t their experience in taking part
To see if they would get a result
Tackle problems to save time and money
What is a case study
An intensive description of a single individual or case allowing researchers to analyze unique cases in extreme detail
How could a researcher attain information when doing case studies
Psychological tests, interviews, interview family members, and observe them in certain situations
TRUE or FALSE are case studies quantitative
FALSE they’re qualitative research tool — ideographic
Strengths of case studies
-provide rich data and they can get lots of detail on why people behave in a certain way — unlike quantitative
-they use naturally occurring scenarios that couldn’t initially be set up by an experimenter for ethical reason
Weakness of case studies
- there are ethical issues as informed consent cannot be difficult to obtain if they have a disorder/incapacitated to hinder giving fully informed consent
-there is difficulty with generalization as only a single person is used therefore it’s difficult to generalize these findings
