Experimental Design Flashcards
What are the 3 experimental designs
independent measure
repeated measures
matched pairs
define independent measures
p.t. allocated to one condition and only taking part in that condition
whats the use of independent measures
to compare one group up against the other to see which is better
e.g drug therapies
advantages of independent measures
-not subject to order effects
-reduced chance of demand characteristics
disadvantages of independent measures
-easily affected by participant variables
-requires a large amount of participants
define repeated measures
-same participants used in each condition
Why use repeated measures
when you wish to compare a groups performance before and after
advantage of repeated measures
-participant variables between conditions and eliminated
-fewer participants are used, less time needed
disadvantage of repeated measures
-subject to order effects
-increased chance of demand characteristic’s
define matched pairs
participants are matched closely and then pairs are randomly allocated to conditions
when to use matched pairs?
when a researcher has a lot of time and money as participants must be matched closely
advantages of matched pairs
-not subject to order effects
-good attempt at controlling participant variables
disadvantages of matched pairs
-difficult to match pairs exactly
-requires a large number of participants
-time consuming, costly and impractical for effective matching
