Qualitative data Flashcards
what technique are questionnaires and interviews
SELF REPORT TECHNIQUES
what type of questions do questionnaires use
OPEN AND CLOSED
define open questions
these give p.t. the opportunity to respond freely
define closed questions
these give p.t limited responses
strength of questionnaires
-theyre easy to use and dont require any special training to do therefore lowering the cost
-these can be distributed to more people and thus, more data can be gathered
weakness of questionnaire
-a greater chance of social desirability bias or demand characteristics because people dont like writing down what they think
-p.t cant ask questions if they’re unsure what they mean
whats the 3 types of interviews
structured
semi-structured
unstructured
what are interviews based around
a set of questions
TRUE or FALSE are interviews face to face
TRUE
whats a structured interview
a list of questions that were written beforehand, cannot deviate from this - ensuring all p.t are asked the same q’s
whats a semi structured interview
a list of topics and q’s written beforehand however the researcher can change the ORDER
whats a unstructured interview
-p.t is free to talk about whatever they like - though interviewer does set topic but the conversation is dictated by p.t responses
strengths of interviews
-data is provided spontaneously which means its more realistic and gives a clear representation of what’s being investigated
-standard interviews are easy to administer
-an interview can provide great insight into a matter such as psychological abnormality
weakness of interviews
-if the interviewer isn’t skilled, they may influence the findings through investigator effects
-p.t responses can be affected by social desirability bias
-interviewers are too lengthy and require a large amount of p.t. time compared to questionnaires
