small ruminants Flashcards
goats
browsers
eat with their heads up
less likely to getparasites
sheep
grazers
sheep are susceptable to copper toxicity
interacts with olybdenum and forms an insoluble complex. over10:1 leads to toxicity.
when molybdenum is less than1 ppm normalcopper levels are toxic.
selenium supplementaton will increase copper utilization
less than 1 Molybdenum
growth: 8-10
gestation: 9-11
lactation: 7-8
more than 3 ppm molybdenum
growth: 17-21
gestation: 19-23
lactation: 14-17
copper problems
cumulative
trace mineral salts may hve alot
mixed or manufactored lamb feeds will have alot
many no copper salts have copper contamination
more errors with mixed feeds
signs of copper toxicty
hematuria icterus depression anorexia weakness excessive thirst hemoglobinemia hemorrhagic enteritis suddendeath related to stress uremia
looks like copper toxicity
toxic plants
eperythrozoaa
onin poinson
leptospirosis
how to treat copper poisoning
ammonium molybdate and sodium thiosoulface orally per day for 2-3 weeks
keep copper/molybdate ratiobew 6:1 or 8:1, may need extra molybdaate
cu mo complex is formed in gi tract reducing copper absorption
toxic liver levels 100-2000 ppm
toxic kidney levels greater than 15 ppm
