tetraplegia
aka quadriplegia
paralysis of upper & lower extremities as well as torso
usually due to cervial SCI
paraplegia
impairment in motor or sensory funciton in lower extremities
hemiplegia
paralysis of 1/2 the body
typically caused by focal brain injuries (stroke)
effects of cervical SCI
- tetraplegia
- may result in loss of physical sensation, respiratory problems, bowel, bladder, & sexual dysfunction
effects of thoracic SCI
- paraplegia
- less common due to rib cage
- may result in loss of physical sensation, bowel, bladder, & sexual dysfunction
- may have torso weakness
- generally good hand control
effects of lumbar SCI
- paraplegia
- may result in loss of physical sensation, bowel, bladder, & sexual dysfunction
effects of sacral SCI
- very rare
- weakness or paralysis of hips, legs, feet, & genital organs
- loss of bowel, bladder, & sexual dysfunction
