Sleep and dreams Flashcards
circadian rhythms
biological clock (controlled by hypothalamus)
Provides approximate schedule for physical processes
(for example, of temperature and wakefulness) that occur on a 24-hour cycle.
how does light affect the SCN?
Gets darker SCN tells pineal gland to secrete melatonin
Gets lighter SCN tells pineal gland to stop secreting melatonin
REM Sleep
brain waves resemble wakefulness
Eyes move back and forth
Heart rate, blood pressure, breathing - rapid or irregular
Dreams
EEG looks as if they are awake-waves are active.
N-REM 1
similar to drowsiness. Light sleep you can easily be awakened.
N-REM 2
true sleep - reductions in heart rate and muscle tension
Brain waves are more relaxed.
Can be awakened by door opening.
N-REM 3/4
deeply asleep, hard to awaken, disoriented when awakened
Growth hormones released from pituitary
