Sleep Flashcards
what state are the muscles in in REM and non REM sleep
partial msucle relaxation in non REM
atonic (except diaphgram and extraocular muscles) in REM
compare the EEG activity of non/REM sleep
non REM - rhythmical, synchronized EEG activity
REM sleep - fast activity with inc brain activity
compare CBF in non/REM sleep
decreased in non REM sleep, increased in REM
when does narrative dreaming occur
in REM sleep
which type of sleep is the most important
NREM sleep - allows cortex to recover after a busy day
what is the role of REM sleep
may be important for early brain development - likely dispensable
how much REM sleep do neonates have
50%
how do elderly sleep differ
increased awakenings, reduced total sleep time and more daytime napping - multiple reasons
does body clock differ between age groups?
yes, children run earlier and teens run later
how long does the normal ciradian rhythm last
25 hours
when are the 2 peaks for sleepiness
bedtime and mid afternoon
does light have a role in circadian rhythms?
yes, the retinal ganglion cells entrain the ciracdian rythms to light
is exercis ability impaired by lack of sleep?
there is no evidence that muscle function is impaired, the effects are merely psychological eg you feel tired
how would you function on a lack of sleep - what tasks could you do and not do
prefrtonal function can perform old and well rehearsed tasks and routine behaviour
however, alertness is impaired and cannot do much more - complex situatios etc
is it dangerous to drive on a lack of sleep
more dangerous than drink driving !!
