Cognitive Neurology Flashcards
transient global amnesia
sudden, temporary episode of memory loss that cannot be attributed to a neurological condition
which kind of memory loss occurs in TGA
Anterograde amnesia – can’t create new memories after the event that caused the amnesia. There is a preserved knowledge of self.
how is the patients function in TGA
they are mentally alert and lucid - no other signs of cognitive impairement
how long does TGA last
4-6 hours
are there any triggers for TGA
can be triggered by emotions or chanages in temperature
transient epileptic amnesia
a form of temporal lobe epilepsy where the seizures manifest as 15-20 min episode of memory loss - both anterograde and retrograde
how long do episodes of transient epileptic amnesia last and how often do they occur
20-30 min
about once a month
which type of epilepsy is transient epileptic amnesia associated with
temporal lobe
do patients with transient epileptic amnesia typically have seizures too
2/3 have temporal lobe seizures
in TGA and transient epileptic amnesia does the patient have a resrved knowledge of self?
they do in TGA, not in transient epileptic amnesia
what do patient tends to forget in transient epileptic amnesia
topographical, accelerated long term forgetting, autobiographical amnesia
can carry out complex activity and not remember
pt may remember not being able to remember
what is classical behaviour during attacks of transient epileptic amnesia
repetitive questioning
management of transient epileptic amnesia
a repsonse to anti epileptic medication is seen
functional subjective cognitive impairment
everyday forgetfullness impacting on function
does functional subjective cognitive impairment impair pt on daily basis
often there is a mismatch between symptoms and reported functioning - eg ppl at work havent noticed
is functional subjective cognitive impairment progressive?
symtoms flucctuate
may be part of a more generalsied functional disorder
who does functional subjective cognitive impairment tend to be mroe common in
Seems to be more common in those with a previously good memory (people who have always been a bit absentminded tend to notice them less).
what must be excluded on a diagnosis of functional subjective cognitive impairment
anxiety and depression - concentration symptoms are common
