What changes in sleep are observed as age progresses?
As age increases, there is a total reduction in sleep time.
There is an early reduction in % of REM sleep (peaks at 8 months).
By age 40, there is a reduction in stage 3&4 sleep.
What are the two halves of sleep?
Sleep is split into two. 1st 5 hours (most of deep stage 3+4 sleep) and half of REM SLEEP.
Optional sleep is the 2nd half, mostly stage 2+1.

7.75 hours is the mean sleep duration.
During which type of sleep do dreams usually occur?
Dreams don’t always occur during REM, but 2x more likely to be during REM.

Insomnia can be treated using, hypnotics, sleep education, behavioural changes in sleep hygiene and relaxing techniques.

How much sleep does the average person need each night?
The average person needs about 8 hours of sleep each night.
