Authoritarian: strict ideas about discipline that are non negotiable
Authoritative: ideas about discipline are explained and discussed.
Permissive: relaxed idea about behaviour and discipline.
What are parental responsibilities according to UK law?
Mother has parental responsibility from birth; father only has responsibility if married.
Responsibilities include: provision of home, protecting child, disciplining child, providing education and choosing religion, agreeing to medical treatment.
What are the 4 styles of parenting according to Maccoby and Martin (1983)?
Demanding - responsive: authoritative.
Demanding - unresponsive: authoritarian.
Undemanding - responsive: permissive
Undemanding - unresponsive: uninvolved.
What is the difference between demanding and responsiveness in styles of parenting?
Demanding is behavioural control.
Responsiveness is psychological control.
What effect does authoritative parenting have on children according to Steinberg et al?
Authoritative parenting leads to parental acceptance and warmth, supervision and strictness, democracy and supporting autonomy.
Leads to better academic achievement and more socially competent.
What are the five parenting guidelines?
Be united: adults support each other. Be clear: rules and expectation in advance. Be consistent: no means no.
Be flexible: rules may need to change as kids grow up.
Be loving: children need to know you have their best interest at heart.
