What is The Hard Problem (1994) by Chalmers?
The Hard Problem tries to explain how physical processes in the brain give rise to a subjective experience.
Give examples of altered states of consciousness?
Sleep and dreams, psychoactive drugs, meditation and hypnosis can all alter consciousness.
How are psychoactive drugs classified?
Classified by behavioural effect.
Sedatives and hypnotics, stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens and psychedelics.
What are the two main forms of meditation?
Meditation is split up into two forms: concentrative/one point meditation and open meditation.
Concentrative meditation diminishes sensory input.
Open meditation makes you aware of everything but not met with responses. (Mindfulness)
What is the definition of hypnosis according to Kilstrom?
Hypnosis is an interaction whereby an individual responds and involves alterations in perception, memory and voluntary action.
What are the two views about hypnosis?
1) altered consciousness or
2) a period of focused attention and exists in a state of compliance and suggestibility.
