Sleep Stages
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement)
REM Sleep
Period of sleep with rapid eye movement and dreaming
NREM Sleep
Characterised by slow and synchronised brain wave activity and the absence of rapid eye movements.
Melatonin
A hormone that causes sleepiness in humans
Sleep-Wake Cycle
24-hour sleep pattern consisting of 16 hours of daytime wakefulness and 8 hours of night-time sleep
Circadian Rhythm
Rhythms occuring once every 24 hours (e.g. sleep-wake cycle)
Stage 1 NREM Sleep
Relaxed state during transition from awake to asleep
Stage 2 NREM Sleep
Deeper stage of sleep, still easy to wake from
Stage 3 NREM Sleep
Start of deep sleep, less responsive to external stimuli
Stage 4 NREM Sleep
Deepest sleep, difficult to wake from
Hypnogogic
Relaxed state with hallucinatory images and muscle twitches
Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder
Circadian phase disorder that delays sleep patterns
Muscle Atonia
Paralysis of muscles during REM sleep
