Lie
A false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth
Lying and Emotions
Lying might cause us to feel an emotion (subjective experience) and this emotion can sometimes be detected
Expressive Behaviour in Lying (5 cues)
- High-pitched voice
- Microexpressions
- Eye contact
- Adapters
- Head movements.
High Pitched Voice
People often use a high-pitched voice when lying. Words may be out of order or muddled and be spoken too quickly.
Microexpressions
Facial expressions reveal the truth for a few tenths of a second before hiding the truth.
Eye Contact
Avoiding eye contact, blinking, squinting, holding gaze for a while
- Changes with culture
Adapters
Hand movements (e.g. repeatedly touching face or body, wringing hands) and hidden hands are signs of lying and deception.
Head Movements
Head movements (nodding while saying no, moving head from side to side while saying yes) indicate lying.
- Person may be focussed on spoken lie than head movements

- Questions that requires long responses rather than a yes or a no answer

Raising heart rate, sweaty palms, butterflies in the stomach or goosebumps
