What happened in slavery?
The slave trade lasted from the 1400s to late 1800s. This triangle started in Portugal and then spread across Europe. The triangle went from Europe to West Africa to the Americas Once Europe got to West Africa, Europe offered weapons, money, rum, cloth, silk and other goods that the leaders of Africa couldn’t say no to, Europe gave these things in exchange for enslaved people. Who were treated like objects instead of people. The enslaved people were then taken in a boat through the middle passage, they had no choice and no pay for this. Around 12 to 15 million people were taken on this voyage and 20% of them were never able to see land again because they died on this voyage. The survivors suffered from starvation, below deck, it was cramped and nobody could do so much as move, diseases were spread, the women and children were abused on board and the men were forced to dance to stay fit so the captain could sell the enslaved people more easily and get more money. Once people got to the Americas they were sold and taken to plantations where they worked making tobacco, sugar and cotton. They were treated horribly and they couldn’t do anything. Some people could buy their way out but others were poor and couldn’t.
