What is the main cause of slapped cheek syndrome?
Parvovirus B19
How is parvovirus B19 spread?
Respiratory route
When is a person with parvovirus B19 infectious?
3 to 5 days before the appearance of the rash.
What is the characteristic features of Parvovirus B19?
Rash that appears quite rapidly as a diffuse bright red rash on both cheeks
Rose-red rash makes the cheeks appear bright red
What can occur before the rash appears
- Mild fever
- Coryza
- Non-specific viral symptoms- muscle aches and lethargy.
When does the rash typically appear after the onset of symptoms?
About 2-5 days after the onset of symptoms
What can appear a few days after the onset of the rash?
A reticular mildly erythematous rash affecting the trunk and limbs appears that can be raised and itchy
How does the facial rash progress?
Peaks after a week and then fades.
For a few months after a warm bath, sunlight, heat or fever will trigger a recurrence of the bright red cheeks and the rash itself.
What can trigger the recurrence of the rash a few months after it has faded?
Warm bath
Sunlight
Heat
Fever
What type of condition is slapped cheek syndrome?
Self-limiting condition

Simple analgesia and fluid
