How bones make up the skull?
22 or 29. 29 including the hyoid and inner ear bones.
Suture
Fibrous joints that connects the bones of the skull.
The skull is divided into two parts.
Braincase also known as neurocranium which encloses the brain. One of the main functions of the braincase is to protect your brain. In addition to the braincase, there’s the facial skeleton known as the viscerocranium which provides structure and support for soft tissues of the face and houses the teeth.
Calvaria
is the top of the skull. From here you can see the suture lines.
Coronal suture
connects the frontal bone to the parietal bones.
Sagittal suture
separates the parietal bones.
Lamboid suture
connects the parietal bones to the occipital bone.
Lower portion of the skull?
Skull base/cranial base.
Inside the cranial base
Anterior cranial fossa, middle cranial fossa, posterior cranial fossa.
What does the cranial base comprise?
Frontal bone, parietal bones, occipital bone.
Viscerocranium
the facial skeleton.
