Chapters 9 - 10 Flashcards
calat-
something inserted. e.g., intercalated disc: membranous band that connects cardiac muscle cells.
erg-
work. e.g., synergist: a muscle that works with a prime mover, producing a movement.
fasc-
bundle. e.g., fasciculus: bundle of muscle fibers.
-gram
something written. myogram: recording of a muscular contraction.
hyper-
over, more. e.g., muscular hypertrophy: enlargement of muscle fibers.
inter-
between. e.g., intercalated disc: a membranous band that connects cardiac muscle cells.
iso-
equal. e.g., isotonic contraction: contraction during which the tension in a muscle remains unchanged.
laten-
hidden. e.g., latent period: period between a stimulus and the beginning of a muscle contraction.
myo-
muscle. e.g., myofibril: contractile fiber of a muscle cell.
reticul-
a net. e.g., sarcoplasmic reticulum: network of membranous channels within a muscle fiber.
sarco-
flesh. e.g., sarcoplasm: substance (cytoplasm) within a muscle fiber.
syn-
together. e.g., synergist: muscle that works with a prime mover, producing a movement.
tetan-
stiff. e.g., tetanic contraction: sustained muscular contraction.
-tonic
stretched. e.g., isotonic contraction: contraction during which the tension of a muscle remains unchanged.
-troph
well fed. e.g., muscular hypertrophy: enlargement of muscle fibers.
voluntar-
of one’s free will. e.g., voluntary muscle: muscle that can be controlled by conscious effort.
Tendons
attaches muscles to bone.
Ligaments
attaches bone to bone.
Epimysium
are layers of connective tissue that closely surrounds a skeletal muscle.
Perimysium
are layers of connective tissue that extend inward from the epimysium and separate the muscle tissue into small sections. It is layers of connective tissue that separate a muscle into small bundles called fascicles.
Fascicles
Contains bundles of skeletal muscle fibers.
Endomysium
are thin layers of connective tissue that surround an individual muscle fiber.
Sarcoplasm
The cytoplasm of a muscle fiber.
Fascia
are connective tissue located between adjacent muscles.
Transverse (T) tubule
Membranous channel extending inward from muscle fiber membrane.
Sarcolemma
The cell membrane of a muscle fiber.
Myosin
Protein found in thick filament
Actin
Protein found in thin filament
