What are common signs of skin infection?
Pustules, temperature, golden crusting, lymphdenopathy and exanthema (wide-spread rash in children)
What usually causes viral warts?
HPV (associated with cervical cancer)
What causes a fishtanks granuloma?
Mycobacterium marinum
What is a fish tank granuloma?
Where mycobacterium marines enters through broken skin when someone is cleaning a fish tank
What is impetigo?
Golden crusting of the skin due to staphylococcus
What tends to cause impetigo?
Staphylococcus or streptococcus
What is erysipelas?
A form of superficial cellulitis that has a rash with a clear demarcated edge due to group A steptococcus
What bacteria causes erysipelas?
group A steptococcus bacteria
What is exanthem?
An acute inflammatory rash associated with childhood infections
What is ‘slapped cheeks’ caused by?
Parvovirus infection
Describe the rash for meningococcal meningitis
Non-blanching (doesn’t disappear when glass is put over it)
What are the signs/symptoms of kawasaki disease?
Pyrexia, lymphadenopathy, swollen red lips, erythema (redness) of the palms with oedema and desquamation (skin peeling) of the fingertips
How may scabies be diagnosed?
Scabies mites present on microscopy
What type of rash do viral causes of exanthema cause?
Blanching rashes (disappear with glass)
What is pityriasis versicolour?
Presents with brown, scaly macules on the torso which don’t tan in the sun, causing a mottled appearance after sun exposure
