What is fascia?
Connective tissue that surrounds and holds organs, blood vessels, bones, nerve fibers and muscles in place
What are the types of fascia?
Superficial and deep
What is superficial fascia?
Loose collection of adipose and loose areolar tissues which connects the skin to the underlying structures
Where is superficial fascia present most/least?
Most: Scalp, palm of hand and sole of foot and contains collagen bundles
Least: Eyelids, auricle, scrotum, penis and clitoris
What is the function of superficial fascia?
Facilitates movement of skin over underlying structures
Passage for cutaneous vessels, nerves
Protects the body against heat loss
What is deep fascia?
Compact, regular arrangement of collagen fibers
Denser than superficial fascia
Usually present in the form of membranes
Where is deep fascia located?
Covers the muscles’ superficial surfaces and adheres to the spine of the scapula.
