SKIN Flashcards
Description of the integumentary system
largest organ of the body
made up of the dermis and epidermis
Function include:
protection, metabolic function, body temp, excretion, cutaneous sensation, and blood resevoir
the outermost protective layer made of dead, keratinized epithelial cells
epidermis
The layers of the Epidermis, Deepest to superficial
stratum basale (mitotic) stratum spinosum (tight junctions) stratum granulosom (water proof) stratum lucidum (thick skin) stratum corneum ( outermost, dead layer)
innermost which includes stratum basal and stratum spinosum, WHERE MITOSIS OCCURS.
stratum germinativum
Epidermal cells include:
keratinocytes (basal)
melanocytes (basal)
langerhans/dendritic (spinosum)
the underlying layer of connective tissue with blood vessels, nerve endings, and associated skin structures
dermis
The layers of the dermis include
papillary layer (finger prints) Reticular layer (tension lines, surgeons)
The most widely distributed sweat glands that regulate body temperature, by water secretion that evaporates from the surface of the skin. ABUNDANT IN THE PALM, FEET, FACIAL
eccrine glands
Another type of sweat gland that is visible in the armpit and groin area. Much larger, deeper, in the dermis, empty into hair follicle. BODY ODOR, sexual scent
apocrine glands
A type of sweat gland the releases an oily secretion (sebum) through the hair follicles that lubricate skin and prevents drying.
sebaceous glands
Sebum is produced by ________ ______, in which whole cells of the gland are part of the secretion. Susceptible to becoming clogged and attracting bacteria.
holocrine secretion
