Skills Of Scientific Investigation Flashcards
What is used to determine if one variable, the independent, causes or has effect on another variable, the dependent?
Controlled experiment
What are observations of the subject phenomena, without interfering with or influencing it?
Observational studies
Cannot manipulate one thing to control another
What is a variable?
Condition that can change [one at the time]
What is the variable that the experimenter changes and observes the affect of [the “cause” variable]?
Independent variable
What is the variable change is being measured orobserved as a result of applying the independent [the “effect” variable]?
Dependent variable
How many variables should change and what variables are these?
Only one, the dependent variable. All of the other variables which could cause it to in the dependent variable are unchanged or controlled
What is an experiment design in which the independent variable is not applied? What is it used for?
Control group it is used to compare the effect of any change on the test group
What is an experiment design in which a change in the independent variable is applied in the effect of this change is measured observed?
Test group
The two things you need to do when you’re initiating and planning an experiment?
- Have a purpose
2. Create a hypothesis
What is a quantitative property?
Measured and recorded with numbers and units
What is a qualitative property?
Observed with our senses and recorded with adjectives
On a graph what goes on the X axis?
The independent variable [time, hours]
On a graph what goes on the Y axis?
Dependent variable [degrees C]
What is an absolute point?
(0,0)
What does a small circle around a data point mean?
It’s not 100% accurate
On a graph if one variable is qualitative and you want to indicate percentage of the whole what graph you use?
Use a pie or circle graph
On a graph, if both variables are quantitative, what graph do you use?
A point line graph
On a graph, if one variable is qualitative and you simply want to present the data, what graph do you use?
A bar graph
If the line of a graph is climbing up, what does it have?
Positive correlation or direct relationship
If the line on a graph is going down, what does it have?
Negative correlation or indirect relationship
If the data of a graph is scattered, what does it have?
Zero correlation or no relationship
