Properties Of Matter Flashcards
What is a property?
A characteristic that can be used to identify a substance it can either be qualitative or quantitative
What is a physical property?
Characteristics of matter that are observed or measured without changing its identity [mass, weight, volume]
What is the physical property– The temperature went to liquid begins to boil?
Boiling point
What is the physical property – ability of an object to break apart or shatter easily?
Brittleness
What is the physical property – either transparent [clear], translucent [cloudy], or opaque [no light gets through]?
Clarity
What is the physical property – e.g. red, orange, yellow?
Colour
What is the physical property – amount of mass per unit volume of that matter?
Density
What is the physical property – ability to be stretched into a long wire like shape?
Ductility
What is the physical property – definite geometric pattern?
Shape
What is the physical property – determined by the resistance of being scratched, given a scale of 1 to 10 with diamond being rated a 10?
Hardness
What is the physical property – ability for an object to reflect light [e.g. shiny]?
Luster
The physical property – ability for substance to be hammered or bent into different shapes?
Malleability
The physical property – the temperature when a solid melts?
Melting point
What is the physical property – e.g. burnt, flowery, putrid, spicy?
Oudor
What is the physical property – ability of a substance [solute] to dissolve in a solvent such as water?
Solubility
